The engineering challenge

Coordinate the rigid housing, the soft button and the mold release sequence.

The part combines assembly features in the rigid substrate with a softer button surface. The material pairing, gates, mold mechanisms and transfer between shots need to work together. The design discussion below follows the layout documented for this project.

1. Material pairing

ABS+PC for the housing and TPE for the button.

The two materials serve different functions. The rigid substrate supports the housing geometry, while the TPE element provides the button surface. The intended grades and their adhesion behavior should be reviewed together; the material names alone do not establish bond performance.

2. Runner layout

Three-plate cold runner with pinpoint gates.

The documented tooling uses a cold runner arrangement. Gate placement, gate marks, runner handling and the separate material paths form part of the design review. The choice should be assessed against the part requirements and planned production, rather than treated as a universal preference for all two-shot tools.

3. Tool layout and release mechanisms

Lifters and slider inserts address the release requirements.

The project layout shows the forming components, lifters, slider bodies and inserts. Their arrangement needs to release the molded features without interfering with the retained substrate or subsequent molding step. The layout and available travel should be checked together during design review.

4. Two-stage ejection

Release the retaining geometry before pushing the part clear.

The documented design separates the release action from the final ejection. The first stage operates the retaining mechanisms; the next stage moves the released component clear. Stroke, sequencing and contact with the rigid and soft areas need to be evaluated as part of the trial.

5. Machine and trial considerations

The original project record identifies a 320-ton two-color machine with a rotary platen.

Machine compatibility involves more than the nominal clamp rating. The mold envelope, opening and ejection travel, nozzle positions, material controls and rotary indexing all need to suit the design. Trial review checks the operation of these elements together.
